Oklahoma Agriculture Blog

Oklahoma’s Official Agricultural Information Site

  • Welcome!

Terry Peach, Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture

As agriculturists our jobs haven’t changed much from generation to generation but the way we do them sure has! Our roles as providers of the nation’s food and fiber and stewards of the land remain the same but just as we rely on new technologies to become more efficient as producers, we find we now need to find new ways to use them to communicate with each other.

That’s why we have created this blog. Almost 60 percent of the population now depends on the internet for news and other information. The daily and weekly newspapers are still out there (and we still depend on them to reach thousands of Oklahomans) but for all of you who prefer the speed and convenience of electronic communications, this blog is for you.

Let us know what you think and please interact on this site with your thoughts and comments. We are counting on you to let us know what you think and suggest things and ideas that will improve this site and provide you with the information you are looking for.

Terry Peach, Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture

Online Hay Directory Remains Current

Posted by carson4575 on June 22, 2009

Hay buyers and sellers are reminded that the online hay directory maintained by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry is available. The agency is receiving numerous calls from both buyers and sellers who do not know about the directory.

“Since we began deleting entries after 60 days unless the sellers tell us they still have hay for sale we haven’t had complaints about our directory being out of date,” said Glen Schickedanz, Market News Coordinator with ODAFF. “This is an excellent tool for locating supplies or letting people know you have hay for sale.”

His office is receiving about an equal number of calls from both buyers and sellers, he said.

The Oklahoma hay directory is online and the hay hotline is still open at 1-800-580-6543. Schickedanz can be contacted through the hay hotline or by email at glen.schickedanz@oda.state.ok.us.

USDA to Survey Oklahoma Sheep and Goat Producers

Posted by carson4575 on June 22, 2009

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is calling on nearly 5,000 sheep and goat producers Nationwide to collect the latest data on sheep and goat inventory and production. Conducted in July, the Sheep and Goat Inventory Survey provides crucial information for Oklahoma and the Nation.

“During the first two weeks in July, producers in Oklahoma will be contacted to participate in the survey.” said Wilbert Hundl, Director of the NASS Oklahoma Field Office.

“Timely and accurate data on sheep and goat inventory and production allow USDA and the industry to be more responsive to the American and international public, increase consumer understanding and awareness, and establish an appreciation for the benefits of U.S. sheep and goats and their products,” added Hundl.

When contacted by NASS Oklahoma Field Office, producers will be asked to provide information on the number of breeding and market sheep and goats, and the numbers of lambs and kids born during the year. For convenience, selected producers will have the option of responding to the Sheep and Goat Inventory Survey by telephone, mail, during a personal interview, or online.

“As is the case with all NASS surveys, information provided by respondents is confidential by law,” noted Hundl. NASS safeguards the privacy of all survey responses and publishes only State- and National-level data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identified.

Survey results will be published in the Sheep and Goats report, scheduled for release on July 24. This and all NASS reports are available online at: www.nass.usda.gov.
