Oklahoma Agriculture Blog

Oklahoma’s Official Agricultural Information Site

  • Welcome!

Terry Peach, Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture

As agriculturists our jobs haven’t changed much from generation to generation but the way we do them sure has! Our roles as providers of the nation’s food and fiber and stewards of the land remain the same but just as we rely on new technologies to become more efficient as producers, we find we now need to find new ways to use them to communicate with each other.

That’s why we have created this blog. Almost 60 percent of the population now depends on the internet for news and other information. The daily and weekly newspapers are still out there (and we still depend on them to reach thousands of Oklahomans) but for all of you who prefer the speed and convenience of electronic communications, this blog is for you.

Let us know what you think and please interact on this site with your thoughts and comments. We are counting on you to let us know what you think and suggest things and ideas that will improve this site and provide you with the information you are looking for.

2009 Survey Shows Consumers Are Getting Worse In Terms of Food Safety

Posted by carson4575 on June 9, 2009

It seems that every time there is an outbreak of food borne illness, production agriculture is somehow blamed and often even suffers severe financial losses. This is frustrating to producers and those of us in the business of regulating and promoting agriculture because we know the greatest contributors to food borne illnesses are the people who come in contact with food after it leaves the grocery store.

Today I read a report that tells me this trend is actually getting worse. The International Food Information Council Foundation recently released its “2009 Food and Health Survey: Consumer Attitudes Toward Food, Nutrition and Health.”

According to the survey, nearly 40 percent of consumers do not seperate raw meats, poultry and seafood from other foods during preparation and only about half the respondents said they used seperate cutting boards for meats and other foods during preparation.

Perhaps most frustrating was the fact that less than half the people surveyed felt our food supply is safe and wholesome…then again, with their admitted deficiencies in food prepartation, I guess their food supply is at risk.

The deadline for this quarter’s Oklahoma Agriculture Enhancement and Diversification Grant and Loan Applications is July 1st and we’re really hoping for some great ideas and proposals. In today’s Journal Record, Brian Brus reports on one success story the program helped come true.

“Mark Beach knew cattle ranchers could be more productive if they didn’t have to stand around wtching their cows’ behavior for breeding receptivity…”–click here for the full story.

Here is our press release about the Ag Enhancement Program.
