Oklahoma Agriculture Blog

Oklahoma’s Official Agricultural Information Site

  • Welcome!

Terry Peach, Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture

As agriculturists our jobs haven’t changed much from generation to generation but the way we do them sure has! Our roles as providers of the nation’s food and fiber and stewards of the land remain the same but just as we rely on new technologies to become more efficient as producers, we find we now need to find new ways to use them to communicate with each other.

That’s why we have created this blog. Almost 60 percent of the population now depends on the internet for news and other information. The daily and weekly newspapers are still out there (and we still depend on them to reach thousands of Oklahomans) but for all of you who prefer the speed and convenience of electronic communications, this blog is for you.

Let us know what you think and please interact on this site with your thoughts and comments. We are counting on you to let us know what you think and suggest things and ideas that will improve this site and provide you with the information you are looking for.

Posted by carson4575 on March 31, 2009

importedfireant
Last week the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) named 12 additional counties to the list of counties under a state and federal Imported Fire Ant (IFA) quarantine.

The new counties include: Atoka, Coal, Cotton, Garvin, Jackson, Jefferson, LeFlore, Murray, Pontotoc, Pushmataha, Stephens, and Tillman. Counties previously included in the quarantine include Bryan, Jefferson, McCurtain, Marshall, Carter, Choctaw, Comanche, Johnston and Love.

Sancho Dickinson, Director of the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry’s Consumer Protection Services Division, said the quarantine includes soils, plants with soil attached, grass sod, used soil moving equipment, hay and straw, and anything else deemed a threat by any authorized agent of ODAFF or USDA.

“No movement of these regulated articles will be allowed intrastate or interstate,” he said. “These items will have to be certified by either federal or state inspection before being shipped out of the quarantine area.”

Other states with counties under quarantine for IFA include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. The entire states of Florida and Louisiana are under IFA quarantine as is the entire territory of Puerto Rico.

Despite moisture, fire danger remains

Posted by carson4575 on March 31, 2009

Fire Situation Report – March 31, 2009
Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry
Forestry Services
PROTECTION AREA STATISTICS* for Time Period 0800 thru 0800, 03/30/09 thru 03/31/09
NE Area – 7 fires burned 134 acres (Causes: 4-Incendiary; 3-Debris)
EC Area – 3 fires burned 162 acres (Cause: 3-Incendiary)
SE Area – 0 fires

* Protection Area Statistics do not reflect local fire department’s fire run information. Statistics are for the ODAFF-Forestry Services’ eighteen county Fire Protection Area in eastern Oklahoma unless otherwise noted in the Discussion section of this report.

Discussion: Despite the high winds yesterday, no fire control problems were experienced in the Protection Area.

Rain fell across the entire Protection Area last night in association with a passing cold front.

No reports of unusual fire activity or requests for assistance from outside of the Protection Area were received yesterday.

Fire danger today will range from moderate to very high across Oklahoma. Despite the rainfall that occurred last
night over much of the state, numerous fires could occur today in grassy fuels where green-up has not occurred. No fire control problems are anticipated today.

The highest fire danger today will be experienced in the counties in western Oklahoma that border the Texas Panhandle. In this area, Humidity values will be in the teens, winds will gust to near 20 mph, and temperatures will reach sixty degrees. Under these conditions, a fire starting in grassy fuels where significant green-up has not occurred can be expected to burn very intensely.

Special note to the public: Due to the dry air in place and expected winds today that will quickly dry out light flashy fuels, anyone planning a controlled burn should use extra precautions to prevent the fire’s escape.

Report any suspicious wildland fire activity on the Arson Tip Line: 1-866-662-7766 (1-866-NO ARSON).

Four counties are currently under a County Commissioner’s Burn Ban. For a complete listing click on the link to the official Burn Ban Webpage.

Posted by carson4575 on March 30, 2009

Mike Schulte

Mike Schulte

The Commissioners of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission named Mike Schulte as their new Executive Director. Schulte, the former marketing director, will begin his new position April 1, 2009. The Okarche native has a strong background in wheat promotion and agriculture.

“Agriculture production is something that I have been involved in my whole life, I feel it is going to become more important to create direct relationships in the marketing of our commodity crops,” said Schulte. “I hope to create better interaction with foreign buyers to promote Oklahoma’s high quality wheat products.”

Schulte began his employment with the Commission in April 2007. In the roll of marketing director, he worked with trade teams, gave numerous presentations concerning the value of Oklahoma wheat and oversaw many state and national events.

“We analyzed several applications, with the quality being extremely high,” said Don Schieber, Oklahoma Wheat Commission vice chairman and US Wheat Associates Secretary-Treasurer. “His youthfulness and qualifications brought him to the top making him the best fit for the Commission.”

Before coming to the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, he was employed by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture and was in charge of the livestock market news and specialty crop programs for the state.

Schulte graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2001, with degree in Agricultural Communications. As a member of the 12th class of the Oklahoma Agricultural Leadership Program, Schulte experienced many career building experiences from his trip to South America to touring Capitol Hill.

“My experience with the Ag Leadership Program taught me the importance of getting involved and advocating for what you believe in,” Schulte said. “In agriculture we have a great story to tell and I plan on working hard to promote the story of the Oklahoma wheat industry.”

He looks forward to assisting to build and increase the domestic and export markets for Oklahoma wheat and its products through his position as the Executive Director. Schulte also looks forward to traveling the state to interact with the producers and elevator operators for one of Oklahoma’s most important products, Hard Red Winter wheat.

The Oklahoma Wheat Commission works to promote greater utilization of wheat in both domestic and international markets through research, market development and public education. Five wheat producers representing designated districts across the state serve as the Oklahoma Wheat Commission’s board of directors. Current officers are Jeff Krehbiel, chairman, Hydro; Don Schieber, vice chairman, Ponca City; Keith Kisling, secretary-treasurer, Burlington; Tom Stephens, member, Guymon; and Tom Glazier, member, Loyal.

Blizzard Changes Work Plans for Ag Secretary

Secretary Peach took this photo at his ranch in Mooreland Saturday

Secretary of Agriculture, Terry Peach, headed home to his ranch in Mooreland this past weekend hoping to make progress on the new working pen he is building. Over two feet of snow fell Friday and Saturday changing his plans!

Besides making it difficult to get hay to cattle, snow drifts large enough to allow cattle to wander over fences created more problems for Secretary Peach and other northwestern cattlemen.

Snow, rain helps decrease fire activity over weekend

Fire Situation Report – March 30, 2009
Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry
Forestry Services
PROTECTION AREA STATISTICS* for Time Period 0800 thru 0800, 03/27/09 thru 03/30/09
NE Area – 0 fires
EC Area – 0 fires
SE Area – 1 fire burned 30 acres (Cause: Incendiary)
* Protection Area Statistics do not reflect local fire department’s fire run information. Statistics are for the ODAFF-Forestry Services’ eighteen county Fire Protection Area
in eastern Oklahoma unless otherwise noted in the Discussion section of this report.
Discussion: Cool wet weather prevailed over the Protection Area on Friday and Saturday. No control problems were
experienced with the single fire reported in the SE Area on Sunday.
No reports of unusual fire activity or requests for assistance from outside of the Protection Area were received during
the time period.
A Red Flag Warning has been issued from Noon to 8 p.m. for the following counties in southwest Oklahoma:
Harmon, Kiowa, Jackson, Tillman, and Cotton. Strong winds, warm temperatures and low relative humidity
readings are forecast for this area in association with a dry line and a passing cold front. The major threat to
firefighters today will be the increase in winds and shift in direction that will occur immediately after the frontal passage.
Firefighters in and near the warned area should be prepared for extreme fire behavior late this morning and early
afternoon.
No fire control problems are anticipated for the remainder of Oklahoma today with the forecasted fire weather
conditions. However, firefighters should monitor the latest forecast should the weather conditions change from those
anticipated.
Special note to firefighters: Today in and near the Red Flag Warning area, it will be critical to have a good anchor
point to starting your suppression on any fire that starts prior to the frontal passage. This morning thru early afternoon
the winds are predicted to shift from the southwest to west-northwesterly direction. Be sure that the south and east
flanks of any fire are completely extinguished as suppression continues to prevent the fire from rekindling and possibly
escaping your control lines. Attack from the Black!
Special note to the public: Report any suspicious wildland fire activity on the Arson Tip Line: 1-866-662-7766 (1-
866-NO ARSON).
